Cydonia caves has evolved from a 200-year-old historical house used originally as a residence and canava – winery – into an authentic, Cycladic style boutique accommodation. Great effort was given to maintain the history and elegance of the house. As one of our first guests said “It is an accommodation renovated to the modern needs of 2022 but has maintained “the feel” of 1800.
The accommodation seeks to unlock what is special about the island and allow you to bond with the historical setting and enjoy the serenity of the residence. Every detail is an expression of our family’s past and a way for you to experience our history and experience at first hand the roots of Greek hospitality.
The tradition of the family in wine and the location of Cydonia Caves on the Wine Route of Santorini urged us to name the caves and rooms after different Santorini grape varieties: Aidani, Assyrtiko, Athiri and Vinsanto.
The interior architecture of every cave has been maintained during the renovation. The original elegance has been enhanced by original art works.
We value our visitors’ rest and sleep. For that reason we chose with great care to have Sealy, the high-quality mattresses that are hypoallergenic and with a combination of pocket springs and latex allow for a good night sleep.
All rooms are equipped with wifi, a/c, refrigerator, tv, safe, Nespresso® coffee machine, kettle, KORRES toiletries, beach towels, hair dryer, iron and ironing board (upon request). All rooms are non smoking.
AIDANI
Deluxe Room with Terrace and Jacuzzi
Named after the white grape variety that is used to produce dry white wines or dessert wines and is mainly found near the Aegean Sea. This room used to be the “sala” (living room) of the house where guests were welcomed and entertained.
The room has maintained its elegance. It is decorated with original works of art and original artifacts found in the house during the renovation. Of unique beauty are the so called “poria” stone decorations around the doors and windows that are over 200 years old. All doors and windows are an exact replica of the original ones. As is the original Santorini architecture the window shutters on the inside of room to allow residents very quickly to protect themselves against the often pirate attacks.
Aidani room is 30m² and has exclusive use of the terrace with jacuzzi and lounge chairs with great views of the sea, village and night sky. The bed mattress is SEALY queen size.
ASSYRTIKO CAVE
Grand Canava Suite
This cave used to be the heart and soul of the house, the canava, where wine was produced. It is named after the famous ‘Assyrtiko’ grape produced also in the family vineyards. Today, the grapes harvested are given to Sigalas winery and used in producing the famous Assyrtiko “Santorini” wine.
The experience of living in Assyrtiko, 77m², a 200 year old canava is unique. It is decorated with original works of art and original artifacts found in the house during the renovation. Of unique beauty are the so called “poria” stone decorations around the doors and windows that are over 200 years old.
In the room you will discover the entrance to a underground tunnel that allowed residents to escape outside the village during pirate attacks, that is now closed. All doors and windows are an exact replica of the original ones. As is the original Santorini architecture the window shutters on the inside of room to allow residents very quickly to protect themselves against the often pirate attacks.
Assyrtiko cave is 70m² . The bed mattress is SEALY king size and there are also 2 sofa beds with twin size SEALY mattress. There is a Bluetooth Marshall speaker to enhance your stay.
Athiri Cave
Exclusive Suite with Terrace and Jacuzzi
This cave was the main part of the everyday living quarters of the family. It is named after the vine, Athiri, an ancient white grape of the Aegean Sea, used for centuries to make excellent dry white wines with a more citrus flavour.
It is decorated with original works of art and original artifacts found in the house during the renovation. Of unique beauty are the so called “poria” stone decorations around the doors and windows that are over 200 years old.
All doors and windows are an exact replica of the original ones. As is the original Santorini architecture the window shutters on the inside of room to allow residents very quickly to protect themselves against the often pirate attacks.
Athiri cave is 40m² and has exclusive use of the terrace with jacuzzi and lounge chairs with great views of the sea, village and night sky. The bed mattress is SEALY queen size. There are also two sofa bed with a twin size SEALY mattress each.
Vinsanto Cave
Two Bedroom suite with private yard
Visanto wine, is a naturally sweet dessert wine made from sun dried grapes and is the owners favorite digestive. The caves were originally mews and housed the goat and hens of the house.
They are decorated with original works of art and original artifacts found in the house during the renovation. Of unique beauty are the so called “poria” stone decorations around the doors and windows that are over 200 years old. All doors and windows are an exact replica of the original ones. As is the original Santorini architecture the window shutters on the inside of room to allow residents very quickly to protect themselves against the often pirate attacks.
Visanto Cave is 52m² and has exclusive use of a yard. It has one bed with a SEALY king size mattress and one with a SEALY queen size mattress. There is also a sofa bed with a SEALY twin size mattress.
BROUSKO
Junior Suite
This cave originally housed the donkeys and hens of the house.
It is decorated with original works of art and original artifacts found in the house during the renovation. Of unique beauty are the so called “poria” stone decorations around the doors and windows that are over 200 years old.
